What is Home of Your Own?
Home of Your Own is a free online self-help tool that helps renters affected by family violence understand their housing rights and options under Victorian rental laws.
Family violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children in Victoria. Renters experiencing violence often face difficult choices about their housing, safety and financial stability.
Home of Your Own helps people understand their legal options and take early steps to stay safely housed or move on safely if they need to.
How the tool helps
Home of Your Own provides personalised legal information based on a renter’s situation. By answering a series of simple questions, users receive guidance about their rights and the options available to them.
The tool helps renters:
- understand their rights under Victorian rental laws
- explore options to stay in their home safely
- leave a rental property safely if needed
- communicate with rental providers about changes to their tenancy
Users can also generate tailored documents to send to their rental provider.
