Refugee and migrant rights

We help migrants, refugees and asylum seekers to navigate the legal system, and help them have a fair chance at a better life. We engage with services to identify emerging areas of legal need, and leverage our network of pro bono lawyers to help fill the gaps.

Focus areas for our work on refugee and migrants rights

Judicial review matters

We work with barristers to assess the merits of a judicial review application where an asylum seeker seeks the Federal Circuit Court’s review of a decision not to grant a protection visa. If an asylum seeker’s matter has reasonable prospects of success, we refer their matter to pro bono lawyers, who, along with a barrister, will support the asylum seeker through the court process.

We cannot assist with visa applications or merits reviews before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal or the Immigration Assessment Authority.

Visa cancellations or refusals

People who have called Australia home for most of their lives are a product of this country’s successes and failures. We may be able to find people a lawyer to help where their visa has been cancelled or refused on character grounds, and they have few ties to their country of origin.

Our services

We’ve spent 25 years connecting people and community groups who need help with the lawyers who help them via our network of over 10,000 pro bono lawyers.
